Smudging |
Smudging is an ancient practice in which burning herbs create cleansing smoke to purify people, places and objects. Used in ceremonies or to cleanse a new home or work space. In the Native American culture, white sage, cedar & sweet grass drive out evil influences, purify, attract good spirits & provide protection. Herbs are burned in an abalone shell & fanned to represent the four elements: water(the shell), fire(burning herb), air (the smoke) and earth (the herbs). Smudging should begin in the East and continue clockwise to include the four directions, then offered to Mother Earth and Father Sky.
